Novel Breakthrough for treatment of obesity

3 conundrums in obesity management are:
  1. Need to promote hunger suppression and food avoidance;
  2. Enhance satiety and fullness:
  3. Stop binge and or nighttime eating.
Numerous studies have documented that medications which increase brain serotonin (5-HT) are effective anorectic agents which help obese patients lose weight and also decrease craving for sweets and carbohydrates.

Evidence from other studies also indicate that increases in brain 5-HT may help decrease craving for alcohol and cocaine.

It's all the same addictive behavior:
  1. Eating
  2. Sex
  3. Compulsive gambling
  4. Drug and or alcohol addicition.
A novel mediciation i.e.,  5-hydroxy-L-tryptophan, abbreviated 5-HTP, is the immediate precursor of serotonin (5-HT). When administered in combination with an inhibitor of peripheral decarboxylase such as carbidopa, 5-HTP increases brain serotonin.  Without being combined with the carboxylase inhibitor, straight 5-HT is less effective.   Increases in synaptic 5-HT decreases the firing rate of 5-HT neurons via stimulation of inhibitory 5-HT1a receptors located on the cell bodies in the raphe.  This serves as a negative feedback loop.

The clinically available beta adreneric receptor antagonist medication pindolol (normally used for B/P control) ironically also acts as a  5-HT1a antagonist, and can be used to increase the ability of 5-HTP to increase brain 5-HT. Previous studies with 5-HTP used doses exceeding 50 mg per day. When 5-HTP was used in combination with carbidopa, the dose of carbidopa was in excess of 50 mg per day. One novel aspect of the invention are the doses of the 5-HTP and carbidopa: much lower daily doses than have been used before are effective in decreasing appetite, decreasing craving for food and for promoting weight loss. The second novel aspect of the invention relates to the concurrent use of pindolol along with the 5-HTP/Carbidopa, which enhances the effectiveness of the 5-HTP/Carbidopa combination.

Trimcare is pleased to announce our medically supervised approach has incorporated all these ideas of increasing Norepinephrine with our novel appetite suppressant formulations.  Additionally, by increasing Seratonin, we address the issue of fullness and satiety.  Finally, with our off-label use of a novel migraine medication we have addressed the issue of binge or nighttime eating.

Life and Imperfections: The Acne Attack

A simple office based treatment that is always effective
Sounds too good to be true?

Cortisone injections are the best way to treat acne cysts.   Having recently experienced an unslightly blemish on my cheek, my associate nurse practitioner was able to quickly inject cortisone to take down the inflammation and swelling.  Long used for its anti-inflammatory properties, cortisone works effectively at decreasing inflammation and swelling in acne nodules and cysts.   It is a very effective method for treating isolated spots, but not as a regular therapy.  I personally have not had any exacerbations following these injections.  Remember INJECTIN THERAPY for those stubborn acne cysts.  Don’t pop or squeeze a cyst, because its important to also remove the sac of the cyst or they will return with a vengeance.  Ask about the TRIMCARE 10-MINUTE BLEMISH BUSTER.   Trimcare Real Doctors, Real People, and Real Weight Loss.

Rebound is for basketball not weight loss programs:

Hum must have heard the roar of the basketball hitting my hardwood floor at home, because I thought we used to call weight regain the “roller-coaster” phenomenon.   Somehow I have become focused on an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase.  This enzyme causes fat cells to absorb and store fat.   However both Alpha lipoic acid and CLA (conjugated linoleic acids (fatty acids) block this enzyme and thus the ability of fat cells to absorb and store fat.  Smoking works to inactive lipoprotein lipase, but not recommending this drastic a solution.  That means extra calories are burned or used to build lean muscle-so if you do gain weight, it will rock hard abs or toned legs, but not the wiggly jiggly fat that we want wasted with liposuction.  How much CLA is adequate?   1,000mgs per day.  Just ask us.  We have answers.  Trimcare weight loss.  878-8888.  Check us out on the web.   Incidentally love the taste of salt, but need to cut back.  Stay tuned to tomorrow’s blog about a natural alternative that will still give you the nasty salty taste you crave without overdosing on sodium.  Have a good night!

Sexual Healing

Men can remain sexually active and interested well into their 90s.   An active sex life keeps you young.  While some age-related and physical changes may be unavoidable, medical advances has made age irrelevant.

Ways to promote “sexual healing include  quitting smoking, eating better , and incorporating regular daily exercise like a brisk walk. Be wary of herbs and supplements that claim to promote increased sexual prowess.    Ask your doctor to check as some may interact with your current medications.  Cholesterol and anti-depressants  can lower  testosterone.

Treat complaints of low energy levels, fatigue, decreased libido, and stress the so-called “passion killers,” with testosterone replacement if the level is low.  Testosterone is safe and effective when monitored by a physician.

Remember your never too old for great sex !

If I only knew...

So I am getting older, but I am not old!  This sudden realization is a daily understanding when I take my pills to stave off atherosclerosis especially my cholesterol lowering pill called “Lipitor.”

As a physician , I am one of the many that extol the life saving benefits of this class of medication called statins.   They normalize cholesterol, but more importantly keep vulnerable plaque from rupturing and occluding a coronary artery causing a heart attack.   Most patients should probably be taking a statin to prolong their life and diminish the potential for acute coronary events.

However there are side effects, especially those nasty myalgias i.e., muscle soreness or achiness especially the calf cramps.   Other potential problems include myopathies, rhabdomyolysis (renal failure/florid muscle breakdown), gastrointestinal symptoms, liver injury, cataracts, neuropathy, and even the progression of neoplasia in some circumstances.

CoQ10 sometimes referred to as Ubiquinone or Vitamin Q is a naturally-occring compound found in every cell in the body.  Its alternate name i.e., ubiquinone, comes from the word ubiquinone, which means “found everywhere.” It plays a key role in producing energy in the mitochondria, the part of a cell responsible for the production of energy in the form of ATP.  However statins or other cholesterol lowering medication have been associated with CoQ10 depletion.  t.   Statins interfere with the Krebs cycle and deplete CoQ10.

Now thinking about Trimcare, we have lots of patients on “statins.”  The above side effects are fairly frequent amongst our cohort of patients.  The best method for identifying these nutritional deficiencies is to ask for the Spectracell Test.  This specialized testing allows us to identify multiple nutritional deficiencies and allow for earlier detection and correction of these “nutritional neuropathies.”  Thinking outside the box is a hallmark of Trimcare.

Check us out on the web @ www.trimcare.com.   Now offering the Spectracell Comprehensive Profile for $400.00.  If you’re taking a cholesterol pill and suffering from those nasty calf cramps, ask about our special pricing on Ubiquinone or CoQ10.  Remember too that Ubiquinone or CoQ10 may help in the treatment of Fibromyalgia.   Live long enough and have a big reading list and you might know some really interesting medical facts.
